Time to be Determined

Youth Day, a traditional part of the ACR’s annual conference, offers youth of the city in which the conference is held, experiential learning activities to help them use peaceful conflict resolution skills. Students from Baltimore schools will be participating in the 2016 Youth Day activities
ACR Youth Day is unique in its approach to training peer mediators and peer mediator advisors. Most peer mediation programs are coordinated in the school by school-personnel with support from outside the immediate school to train mediators and, in some cases, to evaluate programming, but without connecting the student mediators to their peer in other schools. This isolation narrows participants’ picture of the field. By bringing young people together with their peers and with adult role models, students’ visions will be expanded and networks formed. They will have greater confidence in doing their peer mediation work and the likelihood of their continued work in mediation in the future is increased.
Activities used for learning experiences will come from a peer mediation training developed from ACR Standard Based Peer Mediation Model with supplemental materials used from Conflict Resolution Education in Teacher Education focusing on active listening, bias reduction, and understanding the power of non-verbal communication. For students who have no experience in peer mediation, we will further provide practice and training in those skills.
